Acoustic stage

Saturday 12th July 2008

Car park adjacent to The Bull, Church Street, Old Glossop 2.00 - 6.00

Free event

This free event, which has been made possible by the generous support and sponsorship of local businesses will feature some of Glossop's finest young acoustic musicians and major performers from around the world.

Muntu Valdo

Vocalist, guitarist, harmonica player and percussionist, Muntu Valdo was first discovered alongside some of the great names of world music including Ali Farka Touré, Manu Dibango,Richard Bona, Lokua Kanza, Eko Roosevelt, Lionel & Stéphane Belmondo, Keziah Jones, Alpha Blondy.

His debut album "Gods & Devils – Moiyé na Muititi" was met with rave reviews in France, as well as in Cameroon and throughout Africa. His music is rooted in the blues, mixing African traditions with striking modernity and technical mastery.

He saunters on stage alone, his harmonica and guitar slung over his chest. His songs are built up layer by layer, thanks to loops, samples and other strange pedals.

"The crowd were treated to Muntu Valdo's guitar magic. Sauntering on stage with a springy step, softly picking at his guitar and blowing in his harmonica, he resembled a youthful, latter-day Bob Dylan. But his music is from a different stream. Using a box of tricks to double-track his guitar and voice live, he added layers of sound to create full-textured, soft songs about peace, love and Cameroonian witchcraft and charmed the audience" Mark Espiner, The Financial Time.

Samuel C Lees Gypsy Jazz

Sam has played for guitar companies such as Fender, Gibson, Roland, and G&L guitars as well as artists such as Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Robin Trower, and Yngwie Malmsteen but now Sam has found a home in Gypsy Jazz.

After years of being an electric guitar player Sam took a year out after recording for Blues matters records and decided that the electric guitar world had become a little stale , Sam had always been a keen fan of technical guitar player a took him self right back to where it all started with Django .

So with a re-infused passion for guitar and a view that guitar should be as bare and as clean as possible Samuel C Lees is pleased to be releasing his new Gypsy Jazz project in Glossop with his old Friend Graham Kidd on Rhythm Guitars this is the only way forward.

George Fell

Up and coming Glossop guitarist, George Fell, first picked up a guitar aged 11, having been captivated by the music in the Coen Brothers film "O Brother Where Art Thou".

Under the guidance of Stefan Grossman's tuitional books, he taught himself to fingerpick in the styles of the pre-war bluesmen.

After discovering John Fahey and the guitarists on his Takoma label, he began composing his own instrumentals. George now combines his initial blues and ragtime influences with bluegrass, classical and jazz to create music in the tradition of the American Primitive Guitarists.

Ben Wetherill

"Wetherill mixes traditional songs with haunting originals and veers between straight-up gritty folk and ethereal psychedelia. His voice possesses a fragile quality, somehow not of this era but also fresh sounding. Though acoustic folk is hardly a new concept, it is very difficult to think of any particular artist he is imitating" Sandman

Thomas Western

"Thomas Western sings beautiful, soulful folk accompanied by a lyrical guitar. He is definitely one to watch, and his wonderful songs Apples in Summer and Your Front Door are worth going for alone." Jade Wright, Liverpool Echo 19/02/2007

Nucleus Roots

Feelings run high when Nucleus Roots (Long time Lift favourites) take to the stage so be prepared for a live performance that will take you through the full gamut of emotions.

Nucleus Roots are currently working on a new album for release this year.

The ideology behind Nucleus Roots was to create a studio resource for the abundant and obvious talent already existing in Manchester. The studio focused on reggae, as the studio grew, so did the catalogue of artists, arrangements and songs. The Nucleus Roots studio then created a platform for the artists in the form of the ''Nucleus Roots Band''

The Band was established in 1996 from the ashes of Manchester's highly acclaimed punky reggae band, Community Charge. In the early days Nucleus Roots was a ten piece reggae band featuring some of the most respected musicians playing on the Uk circuit.

Nucleus Roots have evolved musically, productively and in stature. Having released four classic reggae albums they have become recognised for their unique and authentic roots productions which has led them to musical collaborations with leading reggae artists both as home and abroad such as: Twinkle Brothers, Misty in Roots, Dub Syndicatem, The Natura-ites, Desmond Dekker, Jah Shaka, Aba Shanti and Fredlocks to name but a few

The Lovers

From torch songs to comedy via techno, trash pastiche and all points in between, Marion Benoist and Fred de Fred have created something strange and rather wonderful. Massaging your ears with their cheeky bossa-nova grooves and sultry Gainsbourg-and-Bardot-esque vocals are French duo The Lovers.

Their music has attracted a rapidly growing audience, reaching from the duo's adopted home of Sheffield to all over the UK, France, The Netherlands, Germany and Singapore.Their recordings have graced TV adverts and art installations and are even being used as a grammatical teaching tool by Linguascope and the French Board of Education.

Cheeky and lustful tete a tete, amusing, romantic and at times achingly sexual. If ever there was music that was created to inspire a feeling of romance, paired with a sparkle of lust, then this is surely it.

Fred and Marion have had some stunning experiences so far, some strange, all of them intriguing - from smuggling to bunny girls, Nightmares on Wax to Jarvis Cocker.

The duo set about recording their debut album with the assistance of Sheffield illuminati Jarvis Cocker, Dean Honer and Parrot (All Seeing I/ I Monster) and Kevin Bacon and Jon Quarmby (Finlay Quaye/Pretenders).

The Lovers are so pop that they'd make your granny dance and so sleazy that hotels are redesigning rooms in their honour as we speak.

They take you on a journey as sexy and light hearted as a swingers party at Salvador Dali's house.

Unashamedly romantic, thoroughly modern The Lovers are waiting for you in their bedroom right now.

"The set climaxes with Fred de Fred dropping to his knees, sliding between singer Marion's pins and convulsing with his guitar like a human sex toy." NME

"The Lovers do poignant as well as puerile. (...) They make you reach for the cravat and velvet smoking jacket." THE GUARDIAN

"Lines such as "Come drink my wine/If all that has passed your innocent lips is juice and tea and water" reminds us of Cocker's dry humour and deadpan lasciviousness." THE INDEPENDENT

Laye Sow

Laye Sow is a Fula, from Podor in the Futa Toro region of Northern Senegal, on the Mauritanian border. He was brought up on the African tradition of storytelling through song. He is often described a Muslim mystic. Laye is deeply spiritual which you can easily traced in all his songs. However he is first and foremost an African and the rights and wrongs of African society, as well as the weaknesses that create division, consume him. He is cousin of Baaba Maal and they have occasionally collaborated.

For Laye, like many musicians — and certainly African musicians — there is a very strong element of social responsibility in what he does, “I sing about life as a Fula. My tradition is story and history telling through songs. They respect what songs say and it is important in my culture. The great wall paintings in the cathedrals of Europe are about education, for the medieval people, that is the same role as a musician in Senegal today. Songs are education where no education exists.”

"An addictive new find – it’s rare to hear such a perfect combination of voice and guitar – Laye Sow is surely one of the best young Senegalese singers" - Charlie Gillett (BBC Radio).
